We just got back from a lovely week on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It's nice to be home, but frankly I still wish that I was going to wake up to this tomorrow morning:
We rented a house, which meant that we were able to cook some for ourselves. This did help us economize somewhat, but the price of groceries there was truly shocking (the $15 bunch of grapes has now become part of family lore). But we did venture out to eat several times. Our favorite spot was a place called Miss Lucy's, serving Caribbean-inspired food on the water near Coral Bay.
Pictured here is the avocado snapper that Josh ordered. It was fabulous, as was my coconut grouper. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the accompaniments were similarly impressive.
We also took advantage of being in the Caribbean to order plenty of tropical drinks. Our favorite was the painkiller: a mix of rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice, with an unexpectedly pleasant sprinkle of fresh nutmeg on top.
Here's the painkiller I enjoyed at Miss Lucy's--eating and drinking just a few feet from the water certainly helped matters! I am contemplating trying to recreate a painkiller at home using some of the Cruzan rum we got at the airport on our way home--will report back once I've given it a try.
We also made a couple of trips to Skinny Legs, a famous bar and restaurant in Coral Bay.
I thought the burgers were quite good--here's the cheeseburger that I had for lunch on our first trip to Skinny Legs. But the real draw was that the restaurant had a playground in back. This is close to a necessity when your kids have the patience of gnats.
And both kids turn out to be big fans of virgin pina coladas--who would have guessed?
All in all it was a wonderful trip. Now it's back to daily life and learning to cope without having a kitchen at home (we are in the midst of a kitchen remodel and will be kitchenless until at least mid-March). But I have lots of memories of the beach to sustain me!
